PART 1 - TOTEM FOR GOBI-NEW YORK (2010)

Totem for Gobi-New York focusses on the stark contrast between the ‘isolated’ geography of the Gobi desert and a digitally ‘connected’ New York City. Based on field recordings/photographs collected in the Gobi in 2009, I coded an interactive online app with that footage and presented the work in NYC in April 2010 - the month the Apple i-pad first went on sale - allowing a ‘web savvy’ audience to ‘navigate’ through images/sounds of a region becoming increasingly geographically and technologically 'distant'.

PART 2a - TOTEM FOR DEN HAAG (2010)

Totem for Den Haag replaces the traditional musical score with digital video, creating a new kind of experience for musical performers: a highly complex rhythmic situation otherwise impossible if using conventional musical notation. Written for Ensemble Klang, released on the 'Music at the Edge of Collapse' CD and premiered at hcmf//, Transit Festival Leuven and November Music Den Bosch, Oct/Nov 2010.

PART 2b - TOTEM FOR DEN HAAG [version for Mexico City] (2015)

An arrangement made for CEPROMusic, selected by hcmf// to represent UK new music in the UK/Mexico dual year. Premiered in the Pallacio De Bellas Artes, Mexico City, June 2015

PART 3 - TOTEM FOR BRUSSELS (2010)

In Totem for Brussels, audiences are led across the boundary between acoustic/digital sound and between musical performance and scenography, thus navigating the physical and the ‘virtual’. Made for the TOTEM collaboration with Eric Sleichim and Bl!ndman, with premieres in De Singel, Antwerp and Kaaitheatre, Brussels, November 2010.

PART 4a - TOTEM FOR SYDNEY (2012)

Totem for Sydney uses an exciting system of musical notation, turntable improvisation, DJ software and surround sound design to reinvigorate the concert experience for the listener, placing them at the heart of a complex collaborative network between performers, audience and composer. Written for Ensemble Offspring featuring Martin Ng and premiered at Carriageworks, Sydney and Melbourne Recital Centre, December 2012.
